Fellowship for Emerging Psychoanalysts

The Foundation for Community Psychoanalysis’ inaugural fellowship program will offer financial, logistical, and clinical support to 4 emerging practitioners in Brooklyn, New York.

Components of the Fellowship:

  • Fellows will be offered $30,000 each for two years, for a total of $60,000. This funding can be used to subsidize a sliding scale practice, training opportunities, conference attendance, engaging supervisors outside the FCP, or in any other way that will support their ability to offer high-quality, low-cost psychoanalytic treatment.

  • Fellows will be offered access to office space at no cost at our clinical/community space in Brooklyn, New York.

  • Fellows will be part of a cohort structure in that they will receive support and mentorship from their peers. Fellows will also be provided with access to free supervision or consultation from established analysts if they so wish.

  • Fellows will participate in our ongoing community events, and will be encouraged to propose and organize events individually and collectively.

  • FCP will assist fellows in soliciting referrals for patients who are interested in low-fee analytic treatment.

Requirements:

  • Fellows must be fully licensed mental health professionals in New York State in good professional and ethical standing. They must also be fully insured at all times throughout the duration of the fellowship. Fellowship funds can be used to cover these expenses as necessary.

  • Fellows are expected to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week of treatment for patients who are part of groups that have been historically marginalized from the practice of psychoanalysis and have otherwise been unable to afford treatment. We trust the judgment of the fellows to assess who is benefiting from low-fee or no-fee treatment. We do not verify the income of any patient.

  • Fellows must have experience working under psychoanalytic supervision, or have experience being in personal psychoanalysis or personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy, though experience working within a psychoanalytic institute is not required. We are not affiliated with any particular tradition of psychoanalysis and embrace diversity in the approach to treatment.

  • Fellows must be based in New York City, with a preference for those practicing outside the neighborhoods where psychoanalysis has traditionally built its strongholds. Fellows are not required to use the FCP office space in Brooklyn.

  • FCP requires all grant recipients to sign a grant agreement outlining the core terms we expect them to abide by for the duration of the grant period. If for some reason a grant recipient’s circumstances change and he/she/they can no longer meet the requirements, we will expect the individual to return a prorated portion of the funds so that they may be regranted.

Fellow Selection:

  • When selecting fellows, we will give priority to clinicians who:

    • Are themselves members of groups who are marginalized within psychoanalysis and who will bring racial, ethnic, class, disability status, and sexual/gender diversity to the field

    • Are early in their careers and dedicated to building a long-term practice that includes the psychoanalytic treatment of low-income patients

    • Will bring creative, experimental thinking about the structure of psychoanalytic treatment (ex. group therapy), community building, and accessibility

    • Are interested in working with one or more of the following communities: NYCHA residents, LGBTQI+/gender non-conforming/trans individuals, seniors, families where a parent is or was incarcerated

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2024 cohort.
